Your Stanwood Chronicles: In the 1850’s, loggers started a spar camp at Utsalady. With axes, it took days to cut the straight, knot-free 200 foot trees without damage. These spars were shipped to France and a year later a second load was taken to Holland.

Your Stanwood Chronicles: In the 1790’s, the Spanish explorer Juan de Fuca named the area of Camano Island, Boca de Caamano. Then a US expedition around 1838 identified Camano Island as McDonough’s Island after a hero of the War of 1812. Then in 1847, the British changed the name to Camano Island in honor of Don Caamano, an officer with the Spanish explorer Juan de Fuca. Finally Camano Island had a name!
